Deuter Eliminates All Perfluorocarbons in 2020

Deuter Completely Eliminates PFCs From its Product Line

As part of its larger commitment to sustainability, Deuter, a global leader in backpacks and outdoor equipment, has completely eliminated perfluorocarbons (PFCs), the harmful chemicals that shed from traditional water repellents, from its product line, beginning in Spring 2020. In order to ensure the water and soil-repellent properties of its products, Deuter has replaced these PFCs with a renewably sourced, non-fluorinated DWR (Durable Water Repellency) that is bluesign® approved.

Although the outdoor industry is beginning to come to terms with its impact on the natural landscape, few brands are taking decisive, comprehensive action to eliminate harmful elements from their products. With this move to be PFC-free, Deuter is among those early leaders to take a hard stance on the importance of running a sustainable business.

“PFCs shed into the environment from all conventional DWR treatments, and we see it as our responsibility to eliminate that from the product cycle, thereby keeping those harmful chemicals from bioaccumulating and getting into our water. Despite the rising tide of sustainability stories in the outdoor industry, the fact is that very few brands have taken steps to completely eliminate PFCs. Deuter is the first backpack brand of its size to do so.”
– Jonathan Degenhardt, Deuter USA

The bluesign® standard is the world’s strictest standard in textile products for environmental productional, occupational safety and consumer protection. Although Deuter has worked with bluesign® for years, this is the first time that each and every product across the collection will include bluesign® approved materials. Removing PFCs in this way—not only from select products, but from the entire line—has required years of developing new materials with suppliers and is the culmination of a process that has been underway since 2014.

In addition to removing all PFCs from its products in 2020, Deuter is also releasing a complete range of to-be-announced daypacks constructed from recycled materials at the 2020 Outdoor Retailer Snow Show.

The Global leader in backpacks brings new, bluesign® approved bag collection to urban life for Fall 2020

Deuter announces the launch of its 100-percent Perfluorocarbon-free (PFC-free) Fall 2020 collection. Deuter has long been an expert in the outdoors and the new products build upon its innovative heritage while expanding into more everyday categories for active, urban consumers. The Fall 2020 collection includes the brand’s newest line of urban lifestyle packs, the UP Series, as well as a new AViANT travel luggage line and updated Freerider Pro ski touring pack. The entire 2020 collection is PFC-free and highlights Deuter’s values of high-quality, functional and comfortable gear.

“Deuter has delivered the highest quality packs for hikers, cyclists, climbers and skiers for more than 120 years. The UP Series is a natural extension, delivering the comfort and technical features well known to fans of the brand, but in an assortment that is at home on the commute or campus,” says Jonathan Degenhardt, senior marketing manager at Deuter USA. “With a complete bluesign® approved collection, in addition to going completely PFC-free across our entire product range in 2020, Deuter is doubling down on our commitment to sustainably produced outdoor goods.”

The three packs comprising the UP Series—Seoul, Stockholm and Sydney—deliver the functional, sustainable design for which Deuter products are known, using 100-percent recycled materials. Each UP Series bag features Deuter’s AirContact Back System, which evenly distributes weight for a comfortable, cushioned fit for your work commute or walk to class. They each feature plenty of space and pockets to organize one’s belongings, a padded laptop compartment and an expandable topper.

Also new for Fall 2020 is the new AViANT Access Movo series, designed for frequent travelers. This sophisticated luggage line comes in three sizes: a 36-liter carry-on as well as larger 60-liter and 80-liter sizes. Whether for business or pleasure, AViANT luggage offers smooth maneuverability while dashing through the airport thanks to its four rollers and can also be carried as a backpack via its stowable straps.

Also new for Fall 2020 is the latest iteration of Deuter’s best-selling ski pack, the Freerider Pro, designed for keen backcountry skiers in need of a full-featured winter pack for longer or multi-day ski tours. Key updates to the pack include additional, expandable storage capacity thanks to a new roll top for longer tours, quicker access to gear via a new rear opening and a more streamlined design and aesthetic. Each Freerider Pro pack features a dedicated avalanche equipment compartment with reinforced shovel sleeve and organizer pockets, stowable gear straps to affix skis, snowboard or snowshoes, and a back-panel zipper opening for quick, convenient access.

From backpacking to bike commuting, alpinism and travel, to child-carrying and family adventures, Deuter creates better and more comfortable packs for everyone and everywhere. Its values of sustainability, passion, family, pioneering and meisterlich—German for excellence at one’s craft—have driven Deuter to be a leading global backpack brand. From developing the first framed pack in 1930, to being the pack of choice for the first ascent of the north face of the Eiger by Anderl Heckmair in 1938, to inventing the original bike-specific backpack as well as the very first ventilated mesh back system in its Aircomfort packs, Deuter innovations have shaped the pack industry since the beginning.
