DEUTER IS FOR THOSE WHO LIVE FOR ADVENTURE
DEUTER backpacks have accompanied outdoor enthusiasts on their adventures for over 125 years. It is deuter’s close collaboration with professional mountaineers, physicians and athletes that helps guide the development of new concepts and new products.
100% PFAS free since 2020. Environmental protection and sustainability underpin deuter’s corporate philosophy; which means ensuring sustainability throughout the entire life-cycle of its products; starting with the selection of durable, recycled materials, to the methods of production used by its longstanding manufacturing partners.
TOP GEAR PICKS
The human anatomy is central to the carry system design of all deuter backpacks.
It’s an approach you can feel, because deuter backpacks are comfortable to carry. The fit, ventilation and functionality are all perfectly geared towards the application they are designed for.
Each person is unique. Each outdoor activity has its specific challenges. As faithful companions uphill and downhill, on the bike or on the climb, deuter has developed different back systems tailored to specific requirements. Below is the selection of carry systems that deuter offers, take your time and explore the different features of each system to help narrow down the ones that you feel may be right for you. Experienced deuter backpack fitters can help you find the one that is right for you at your nearest deuter authorized dealer. Take your time and make sure they load your pack so you can feel the weight and how well the pack distributes that weight. Remember, hiking trips can last for days so a comfortable and supportive backpack is essential for your ultimate enjoyment on the trail.
Years ago deuter, with a committee of female designers and female athletes, began designing packs specifically made to fit women better. They named this women’s specific line of packs deuter SL, or deuter Slimline. Instead of being men’s models produced in feminine colours, their carry system is perfectly suited to the female anatomy, because compared to men, women have:
1 – Narrower shoulders
The SL shoulder straps have a pronounced S-shape and soft edges. In addition, the ends of the straps taper off narrowly – for a perfect fit in the shoulder area. Closer straps are designed to fit the narrower female shoulders and help reduce chafing while eliminating pressure points on the chest.
2 – Shorter back
Women usually have a slightly shorter back than men. Our SL carrying systems are therefore adapted to the female anatomy and have a shorter cut.
3 – Conically shaped hips
The closed SL hip fins form a cone to fit the female anatomy perfectly. This conical shape is created by the upwardly converging lugs and the anatomically adapted design of the SL hip fins. The fins nestle seamlessly to the female hip.
Junior packs are made for kids shapes and sizes and they are made to carry weight in volumes that are appropriate for each stage of a child’s development. Purchasing a smaller adult backpack is not the answer as the ergonomics of the shoulder straps, and the way the adult packs carry weight, are not appropriate for junior hikers. They need their own packs, it’s just that simple. deuter has developed a full range of packs for kids with different back systems, different volumes, and for different applications and ages. Below is an overview of what deuter kids carry systems have to offer for your junior explorer on the trail and for school.
Our Extra Long (EL) backpacks offer perfect wearing comfort for tall people! Athletes between 1.85 and 2.00 metres in height often have a hard time finding backpacks that fit them. We have therefore extended the back lengths of the most popular deuter backpack models by six to nine centimetres to match the proportions of larger outdoor enthusiasts.
The backpacks of the Extra Long (EL) Series also offer a larger amount of space with more volume.
The world is round. Circular. And everything in it is connected in one giant circular system. We need to be honest. We don’t want to ‘greenwash’ the whole thing, to make us feel better about ourselves. Our vision is much bigger than that. We call it ‘Together for 360° Responsibility’. And it represents the holistic, all-encompassing approach we take to doing business sustainably. It may not be the easiest path. And it’s certainly not the most direct one. But we’re convinced that it will be more sustainable in the end.
And so we’ve set ourselves fixed goals, and are constantly driving them forward across all areas of the business. They incorporate all the key aspects: the environment and climate, animal welfare, social justice and social welfare – and of course, you, our customers. bluesign® Certified
Even the most conscientiously made outdoor equipment creates an ecological footprint. At deuter, we want to keep that footprint as small and light as possible. That’s why we have adopted the bluesign® system – the world‘s strictest standard for environmental protection, occupational safety and consumer protection in the textile industry – to guide us in our production. By using the bluesign® system, which deuter adopted in 2008, we aim to make our products and the entire production cycle progressively more resource efficient and more environmentally friendly.
Responsible Down Standard
The Responsible Down Standard (RDS) aims to ensure that down and feathers come from animals that have not been subjected to any unnecessary harm. The standard also provides companies and consumers with a tool to know what is in their products, and to make accurate claims.
All of our down sleeping bags comply with the Responsible Down Standard. They are filled with 100 percent certified down. These lightweight and highly insulating sleeping bags also meet the requirements of the bluesign® standard and are treated with a PFC-free durable water-repellent finish. They are made under fair working conditions, with as little impact on the environment as possible. So you can enjoy a good night’s sleep with a clear conscience.
The Green Button
Get out and go green! We love nature as much as you do. And so we strive to make our products as environmentally and socially sustainable as possible. We have already achieved a great deal, but we haven’t yet reached our goal of a truly green process and production environment. But now, we’ve taken another step in the right direction: By having our products and the company as a whole certified by the Green Button label. The Green Button is the world’s first state-run certification mark to establish compliance standards for sustainably produced textiles. The initiative was launched by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in 2019. The Green Button perfectly reflects our own Together for 360° Responsibility strategy, which is aimed at ensuring that our products and our company as a whole are socially and environmentally equitable.
Fair Wear Foundation
The Fair Wear Foundation is an independent multi-stakeholder initiative that works together with brands and manufacturers. Its aim is to improve working conditions throughout the textile and apparel industry, especially locally, in manufacturing countries. deuter has been a member of the FWF since August 2011 and has committed to its strict working guidelines. FWF has recognized this commitment and granted deuter ‘Leader Status’ for several years in a row.

PFAS FREE Since Spring 2020
A few years ago, as part of our sustainability strategy, we decided to get rid of PFAS from all our products. The impetus for us, like many others in the industry, came from Greenpeace’s Detox campaign. In order to maintain the high standards of water and dirt repellent performance of our products, we now use a waterproofing agent that is not harmful to our health or the environment. It is PFAS free and is made according to the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) regulations. It is also bluesign® approved, biodegradable and made using 60% renewable, plant-based raw materials. Which is how we are able to provide top-end performance, without it costing the earth.
Per-fluorinated and poly-fluorinated compounds (PFAS) are a group of more than 3000 synthetic chemicals that have both positive and negative characteristics. They are used in a host of everyday items: They are used to make waterproof membranes and water-repellent coatings on pots and pans, paper, for various technological applications and also for textiles. PFAS end up in the environment during the process of manufacturing, usage and disposal of these products – in particular in groundwater – and have therefore dispersed throughout the world. Scientists have found traces of PFAS in drinking water, air and a wide range of living organisms on all continents. Because PFAS bio-accumulate inside organisms and do not degrade over time, humans end up consuming them through food and drinking water. They have a negative effect on our hormone system and on fertility. It is suspected that higher concentrations of some PFAS are even carcinogenic, which is why they are regulated in the EU by law. For our industry, with a business model that’s based on a love of the natural world, these findings have prompted a new approach. Which is why today, several PFAS-free alternatives have been developed for membranes and waterproofing agents
Why are PFAS used ? PFAS have water, dirt and grease repellent properties and are highly stable. It was their durability and dependability that made them hard to beat for DWR (Durable Water Repellent) fabric treatments. But recently, things have changed. Alternatives like silicone or polymers are being used, which drastically reduce the environmental costs of both the production and the disposal of goods
