FUBUKI, the way people know it today, was founded in Stockholm, in late 2018, by two Swedish skiers/university students. 2018, however, was not the year things originally started. The idea behind the company was formed two years earlier when one of the two founders returned from a season-long ski trip to Niseko, Japan. Among the many things he had fallen in love with during the trip, the most noteworthy one was the orange rubber boots he had seen on the feet of the local mountain workers. In fact, his fascination for these boots, looks and function, immediately caused him to start working on his own version of them. When later joined by his partner in crime, it didn’t take long before FUBUKI was a fact. The name? Meaning “snowstorm” in Japanese, FUBUKI was an obvious pick.
THE ORIGINAL
The first FUBUKI Niseko winter boot model (now known as “the 1.0” or “the original”) had its first glimpse of daylight back in September, 2019. Although very much based on the looks of a traditional Japanese road worker boot, the model took the FUBUKI founders somewhere between six and eight months to develop. Roughly 50 designs and close to 200 different color codes went through the review process before the final decisions were put down on paper and sent over to the boot factory. Roughly twelve weeks later, the first (which later turned out to be the last) batch of Niseko 1.0 was done. The number? 1156 pairs.
Today, these 1156 pairs belong to a very special group of customers. At FUBUKI, we like to call them the front-runners. Without these people, FUBUKI would not be what it is today. If you read this and you are one of these people, we urge you to hang on to the pair you have in your possession. One day, you’ll know why.
All brands/shoe model sizing is different. There’s even a difference between the Niseko 2.0 and Niseko 3.0 so please read this guide carefully before buying a pair of FUBUKI Niseko boots.
NISEKO 2.0 and 2.0 LOW SIZING
The inner length of the boot is the exact measurement between the inner back and the inner front of the boot.
As a man, you might have to step up 1 size compared to your normal size. As a woman, you might have to step up 1-2 sizes compared to your normal size. Follow the size guide and we hope you’ll get it right. If you don’t know what size to pick, please follow the steps below:
PROPER SIZING
1. Place a blank piece of paper on a flat surface, preferably pressed against a wall.
2. Stand on the paper with your heel touching the wall and place a mark at the tip of your longest toe.
3. Measure the distance between the edge of the paper and the mark you placed.
4. Look at the columns to the left in the size chart and pick the size that corresponds to the length of your feet.
**In case you fall in between two sizes, always pick the larger one.
NISEKO 3.0 and 3.0 LOW SIZING
You might be aware that FUBUKIs previous models (Niseko 2.0 and Niseko 2.0 Low) ran a bit small. Especially on the lower side of their UNISEX sizing scale. Their updated models don’t anymore. Hence, if you’ve heard from a friend, or perhaps read somewhere, that you need to size up in their boots, you might want to ignore that information.
FUBUKIs best recommendation these days is that you pick the size you wear in most of your other shoes. If you do so, you will probably end up with the right size in your Nisekos. There’s no reason to size up unless you’re normally in between two sizes. Sizing up to make room for a thicker sock is not something you have to consider. The lining will pack out a little as you begin to use the boots.

The Coolest Pieces of Gear We Tested This Week Fubuki Boots

What if we told you that there is a cozy slipper that you can wear in the middle of a snow storm and not get wet or cold? Well, there is, and although it comes in the form of a boot, don’t believe your eyes—we are convinced that these ridiculous looking boots are actually slippers! Fubuki which means snowstorm in Japanese, is the brain child of two Swedish skiers who fell “in love” with the orange rubber boots of the local mountain workers in Niseko. The two returned to Sweden and created Fubuki.
The NISEKO 2.0 feature a rubber cutter shell that has a superior grip sole. The inside of the boot is lined with a soft fuzzy polyester material that mimics lambs wool. The toe cap is made an Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) composite and is strong and stiff, making it durable and light.
But what really makes the Fubuki a glorified slipper is the weight. Although Fubuki doesn’t list the weight on their site, we weighed one smaller size boot at 516 grams, making it a manageable to boot to fly in with to remote locations or lodges. The NISEKO 2.0 comes in a variety of colors and is becoming very trendy (for good reason) in ski communities around the world. Best of all, the NISEKO 2.0 is priced lower than many other winter boots. We highly recommend that if you live in a cold, wet environment, you’ll be super pleased with these “slippers.”
