Movement Skis World Backcountry Freeride Jam...
Before lifts, before modern ski resorts, skiers had to walk uphill to earn their turns. In fact, the original ski events at the first three Winter Olympic Games were events that involved more time walking uphill than skiing down. Ski touring was the original form of skiing and the original competition ski event. Sadly, the major ski festivals that skiers and snowboarders have become accustomed to no longer celebrate these roots, even though backcountry skiing and boarding is more popular today than at any time in the last 50 years. In addition, backcountry skiing and boarding have become energetic siblings to the very fast growing and exciting Freeride/Freeskiing movement. Freeriding celebrates off-piste riding and the spectacular nature of the backcountry.
The Movement Skis World Backcountry Freeride Jam is a 3-day festival corresponding with the final climatic days of the world famous Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival. It takes place in the premier mountain resort in North America, Whistler Resort (host to the 2010 Winter Olympics).
The MSWBFJ is a new festival whose purpose is to promote the various cousins of in-bounds resort skiing to the ski and snowboard public. Freeskiing without the park and pipe is skiing and riding in its truest and most inspirational form… the untracked cold smoke of uncontrolled terrain. The festival has a host of activities and events that will allow skiers and snowboarders to learn, demo and experience the slightly wilder side of winter. It also includes celebrations of the arts and the rich culture that is a traditional part of the backcountry ski and snowboard community.
The backcountry has never been more popular than it is now. With the incredible advancements in ski and snowboard equipment design, it has never been easier for someone to ride deep powder, travel comfortably, quickly and safely in this incredible environment just beyond the lifts.
This is a not-for-profit event. All net proceeds of the event will be donated to a variety of non-profit groups and associations affiliated with backcountry activities (eg. Canadian Avalanche Association, Climbers Access Fund, etc.).
